Shelly L. Becks

Shelly Lynn Becks, age 70, of Marianna, FL passed away on April 10, 2025 at Jackson Hospital.

Shelly was born September 8, 1954 and not much was known about Shelly’s early years until she arrived at Sunland in Marianna, FL in March of ’63.  During her time at Sunland, she was cared for and provided education and training with the hope of increasing her life skills and building some independence. Her time at Sunland was both positive and successful.  

Shelly’s friendship with Margaret Sharp, Susan English, Harriet Howard and Roma Sue Ward flourished during her time there.  She left Sunland in November of 1977 and moved with her friends into the Rogers Group Home in Cottondale.  It was clear for all to see that these ladies were no longer just friends, but had in fact, become a family. Mrs. Rogers’s had a huge impact on Shelly and she spoke of her fondly through the years.  It was at the Rogers Group Home that Shelly became very involved with church, regularly attending Piney Grove Baptist Church. The spiritual and religious teachings she learned there would stay with Shelly throughout her life. Out of the blue Shelly would start singing or humming hymns that forever remained in her heart. She also had a sixth sense of people in need and would just come over to you, lay her hands on you, bow her head and begin praying.  You may not have understood all she was saying, but you felt the love and peace wash over you from her sweet words.

Shelly moved into the Habilitative Services Farmer House group home in September 2002. From that day until her last – she was part of the Hab Family.  Shelly was tender hearted, kind and was loved by so many.  She loved to dance, she loved to sign, and she loved her MARBLES!  You can bet that whenever you saw her, she had at least two or three in her pockets.  So many people from both Rogers Group Home and Habilitative Services were blessed to have known and provide care for Shel-bel; especially her longtime providers, Kay Kerns, Liz Stuart, Helen Rogers, Erica Smith, Yvette Pittman, Ola Coleman, Peggy LaPlante, JoAnn Campbell, Carolyn MacNair, Brandy Johnson and Lynn Jeter. 

Shelly was preceded in death by Harriett Howard (sister), Roma Sue Ward (sister), and Susan English (sister). 

Funeral services will be 1 P.M., Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at Marianna Chapel Funeral Home with Chaplain Gino Mayo officiating. Interment will be private in Riverside Cemetery. 

A time of visitation will be from 12:30 P.M., until the time of service at Marianna Chapel Funeral Home.
