Merrell (Hughes) Scurlock

On September 10, 2020 Merrell Scurlock gained her wings. There is no doubt that “GG-Pa” was waiting at the gates along with other loved ones to welcome her home. Just ten days shy of celebrating her 93rd birthday, she entered Heaven’s gates free from pain, free from worry, free from stresses of this world. Merrell was born on September 20, 1927 in Faydette, Alabama to the late Eddie Arthur and Minnie Eva Hughes. She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Marianna. Earlier in life she taught Sunday School and was a leader of Women’s Ministries.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Henry Floyd Scurlock, four siblings Agnes Wells, Opal Seay, Nell Scurlock, Martha Sheffield, and granddaughter Loria Bradley.

Merrell is survived by three daughters Legatha Barfield and husband Eddie, Lanita Baxley and husband Danny, Kay Burgan and husband Tim all of Cottondale, grandchildren Clint Barfield and wife Rhonda , Dustin Baxley, Autumn Thompson and husband Treavor, Shannon Burgan and wife Susan, Candice Baxley and husband Wayne, grandson-in-law Ronnie Bradley, great grandchildren Jordan White, Aubree Barfield, Seth Wiggs, Jackson Barfield, Ashlynn Burgan, John Mikal Burgan, and Skyla Baxley, great-great grandchildren Ethan White, and Shyla Wiggs.

Services for Merrell will be held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, September 13, 2020 in the Marianna Chapel Funeral Home with Dr. John Vennell and Pastor Sean Reisenbuechler officiating. Burial will follow in the First Assembly of God Church of Cottondale Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until time of service.
