Gary Dean Latham, age 76, of Marianna, FL, passed away on November 20, 2023 peacefully in his sleep and is now in the presence of our Lord and loved ones.
Gary was born on September 24, 1947, to Dessie R. and William J. Latham at Eglin Air Force Base. He attended Crestview High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Florida State University. He earned master’s degrees in psychology and education. Gary went on to serve as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army and after being honorably discharged, set roots down in Marianna, FL where he worked as a probation and parole officer for the State of Florida. He continued with his work in public service as the director of the criminal justice program at Chipola College and was subsequently appointed by Governor Lawton Childs to the Florida Parole Commission.
Gary and his family were active members of First Baptist Church of Marianna, FL, and he served as a deacon, Sunday School Teacher and captain of the bus ministry. Gary was an avid fan of the outdoors. Along with co-hosting, River Talks, a local cable television show featuring stories about the Chipola River, he was active with the Chipola Watershed Project and was instrumental in projects to re-plant trees along the river.
Gary is survived by his daughters, Dr. Mary Kathryn Anania and Dr. Deana Berube (Scott) and grandchildren Jules, Luca and Adriana Anania.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at Marianna Chapel Funeral Home with Reverend Vince Smith officiating and remarks by Reverend Paul Brooks, David Melvin and Royce Reagan. Marianna Chapel Funeral Home will be directing. Interment will follow in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery in Crestview, Florida.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. prior to the service at Marianna Chapel Funeral Home.
Those serving as pallbearers will be Bryce Melvin, Brent Melvin, Jamie Barfield, Cody Barfield, Jules Anania and Luca Anania.
